At Caldwell Design House, we believe care, craft, and cleverness can bring the best out of every home.
Caldwell Design House is a multidisciplinary architecture and design studio located in the heart Puget Sound on Vashon Island. We believe everyone deserves to love their home. Whether you're starting from scratch, or just need to update your kitchen or to make your mud room function, we're here to help. The design and construction processes can seem complex and daunting. We're here to help with that, too.
I'm the founder of Caldwell Design House. I founded the studio in 2018 after graduating from University of Oregon and spending over a decade at award-winning architectural offices in Chicago, Portland, and Seattle. With my roots on Vashon Island, living in and designing homes for the Pacific Northwest are passions at the core of my work. And with a family tree littered with designers, artists, woodworkers, and contractors, finding my way to architecture was somewhat inevitable.
My grandfather, Theo, was a builder, constructing homes throughout the Northwest with care, craft, and clarity. Although he passed away when I was just three, the work he did and the way he treated those in his professional life — clients, consultants, and employees — remain an inspiration.
In the late 1970s, my grandfather "retired" from the construction business and decided to start a farm in Eastern Washington. He designed and built the farmhouse over a summer, with the help of my father and uncles. The house is simple in its form and use of materials, and functional above all else. (It's a farmhouse, after all.) And in these ways, it's also beautiful. This is the example I seek to follow in my work: architecture with simplicity, clarity, function, and beauty.
